2010 Resolution Planning

I am really horrible with New Years resolutions.  I have kept only one resolution in my entire 24 years and it was last year’s resolution to not flat iron my hair (and eve that I have broken on several occasions).  I do better when I mentally prepare myself for the resolution and have all the necessary tools and accoutrements to achieve my goal.  This year I am setting a few goals for myself early, so I can dive right in on the 1st:

1) Start a ballet class and stick to it no matter how stupid and football playeresque I feel initially.  And preferably do it wearing these shoes, availiable here: http://www.bonadrag.com/shopmain/bags/ballet.html?reload

2) Learn to crochet a granny squares blanket.  I so desperately want one and I so desperately want to make it myself.  Exactly like this one, in lots of fun bright colors:

3) Put myself together every single day, even if it just means jeans and a t-shirt…add a necklace, wear boots instead of flip-flops, and do my hair so I dont look homeless.  Im not talking full on glamour every day, I just want to get more mileage out of the beautiful things in my closet and feel more confident about how I am presenting myself to the world.

*I do have some personal resolutions that aren’t so vapid and shallow (I promise).

Almost an adult

Friday is Sean, my hubby’s, 27th Birthday.  I cant even really believe he is turning 27, an age I have always reserved in my mind as being the age at which you ‘become an adult,’ whatever that means.  One thing that I have come to realize as an almost ‘adult’ (I’m 24) is that you never really feel like one.  You always feel like you are pretending and that you are perpetually 17 and goofy (if you were goofy at 17 that is).  I still feel like Sean & I are playing pretend that we are married, and there is no one that I would rather play pretend married with than him.  Were going camping and riding in the desert this weekend, and I can’t wait.  Last year, at this time, we were headed out to Mammoth to visit my aunt Jackie and celebrate his birthday.

The long (and short) of it

I am insistent on growing my hair out.  Have been for years.  Finally gained some groud after almost a year of *gasp* not straightening my super curly deadlock prone hair.  I have spent almost an entire year of my life looking homeless…all for the persuit of long flowing locks.

In yet, one look at Jaime King’s spread in this months Elle and I was wanting to run straight to Carlos. No not my lover, my hairdresser.

I can’t, I wont.  I’m keeping my eyes on the prize.

Green & Mean

While I am very happy that “Going Green” has become a popular phenomenon, I think it needs to far beyond bringing re-usable bags to the grocery store (which, by the way, is the most fabulous trend that came out of 2009).  It should be one equal part embracing all the new more chemical-free, natural, “green” products on the market & one equal part getting back to basics and consuming less and re-using more.  I am going to do my best to feature great products & ideas that can inspire in this area, as I would really like to continue to reduce my carbon footprint (sounds cheesy I know) and do my part.

Some of my favorite “green products”:

1) Unbleached Un-Paper towls from Athena Creates at etsy.  Check out the listing here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=32936723

2) A Soap Dispenser!  Not too novel or even a new idea at all…but it saves alot of plastic to buy soap in bulk & dispense into soap dispensers.  My favorite handsoap is Method Handwash in Sweetwater which comes in a pouch instead of a hard plastic container, which uses 83% less plastic and resources.  Method products can be found at target, drugstores, hardware stores, pretty much anywhere & uses no animal testing & is completely naturally derived.  This same concept can be applied to oil & vinegar, laundry detergent & cleaners, the list goes on and on…  Buy (natural) products in bulk & dispense them into cute containers (that may or may not be recycled themselves and saved from a past life as a jam jar or a beer bottle or something).

 3) Swap out plastic water bottles for a Kleen Kanteen.  They come in every size and color imaginable (including a sippy cup version for the kiddos & pretty much whatever you put in them tastes better than normal and stays super super cold.

4) Buy Vintage.  Whenever possible, buy things that have already been used and loved and passed on.  This keeps things out of landfills and reduces the amount of new “stuff” that needs to be made, whether it be home furnishings, clothes, party decor, etc.

5) Kraft Paper Products.  I use Kraft paper everything, its sort of an obsession.  Instead of buying cutesy wrapping paper (which I found I could use once and then either  I didnt have enough to wrap another gift or I never had another occasion to use it) I buy large rolls of craft paper which works for literally every occasion & tie it up with event-appropriate ribbon.  You could also decide on a signature ribbon and wrap every single gift up in the same wrap for a chic utillitarian look.  Also an obsession of mine: kraft paper envelopes and cards, which we used for our wedding invitations & for thank you cards and everything in between.  They are still paper, and not entirely “green,” but they are 100% recycled and use 20% post consumer waste.  Plus they are super cute.  And who am I kidding, even green stuff has to pass the “cute” test.

6) Dr. Bonner’s Soap: All natural, fair trade, 100% Organic, & so gentle that you can use it as tooth paste.  All the flavors smell so good, but my favorite is the almond.

*There are so many things that can be re-purposed, that we throw away without thinking.  That is why every Friday, I will feature an idea for “upcycling” products you previously would trash.

Breakfast For Dinner

Breakfast is my favorite meal, especially when it is served up at dinnertime, and extra-specially when it involves some form of egg & some form of bread.  One of my all-time favorite recipe’s (and I actually came up with it on my own, even though I now know it is far from original) is a recipe that involves both!  It is so simple & you can use the remnants of the past week’s meals & switch it up to include whatever ingredients you have lying around in your fridge.

 Breakfast Casserole

Serves 4 People

 8 Eggs, Beaten

¼ Cup Cream, ½ & ½ , Milk, Crème Fraiche, etc… (Whatever dairy you have in your fridge)

3 Tomatoes, chopped

Lots of Chopped Garlic

Lots of Chopped Fresh Thyme

Shredded Cheese (½  – 1 Cup)

Day old (or even older) Fresh Bread-Cut into 1 Inch Pieces

1 tsp. Salt (or to your preference)

1 tsp. Coarse Ground Pepper (or to your preference)

½ Tsp. Paprika (or to your preference)

Olive Oil

Preheat the Oven to 400 Degrees.

Drizzle olive oil in the bottom of an 8 ½ by 11” Pan to coat.   Lay bread at the bottom of the pan to form a layer.  Mix together all other ingredients and pour over bread.

Cook at 400 Degrees for approximately 45 minutes, until center is set and bread peaking out is golden.
